How a Septic Works
A septic tank operates at 100% full; most of the content is water, over time solid sludge will accumulate in the tank. If the sludge level reaches 30% of the tank volume, then it needs a pump out.
As a general rule, most households need pumping every 2 to 5 years. A stench from the septic tank usually means there is excessive sludge build up. If the septic is not pumped out, sediments flush through to the trench, causing unrepairable and costly damage to the trench.
It is recommended that you refill your tank with water immediately after being pumped, this is especially important for plastic tanks, and in wet weather, as there is a chance that the tank can pop out of the ground if there is water inundation in the ground around it.
